Volos-Syria Rail ferry soon to start up
Issued 20 years ago

The Greek transport company Transco SA plans to introduce, at the end of September, a once-a-week rail ferry between Volos and Lattakia, Syria. Later plans call for three more Ro-Ro ships to be added to the route, and the timetable to be made more frequent. Transco got the nod for the job after an international tender called by the Greek Railways Organisation. All four ships will be of the "float in-float out" variety, and will have lift systems that will be able to carry between 53 and 80 14-metre wagons. On the general subject of rail connection, between East and the Middle East, the general secretary of the International Railways Organisation (UIC), Mr.De Fontgalland, has this to say: "The Mediterranean is a sea without tides, thus there is no need to spend overmuch money on harbour installations for rail ferries.
